and Health Mary Baker Eddy 1821-1910
One of the
most innovative thinkers of her time, Mary Baker Eddy became an author, public
speaker, pastor, and founder of a new church and daily newspaper. All this she
accomplished after the midpoint of her life.
From childhood Eddy suffered
poor health. Conventional medicine offered no relief. She investigated alternative
healing therapies and became fascinated by the role of the mind in curing the
body. In 1875 she published Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which
detailed her system of healing. Currently, her approach of integrating healing,
spirituality, and science is experiencing renewed interest.
By the end
of the 19th century, Eddy was one of the most famous authors in the United States.
She had challenged conventional thinking in theology, medicine, and science, and
she had gained an international following. Today, the Christian Science Church
has 2,000 branches and still publishes the Christian Science Monitor.
