The
20-mile Literary Trail of Greater Boston explores the heritage of some of our country's greatest
authors and poets as it winds its way through Boston, Cambridge and
Concord's rich literary territory.
It unites a collection of literary landmarks, and inspired the publication of a popular guide by the same name.
Tours are not currently running, however valuable information to help in planning your visit to these sites can be found on this website.
What the press are saying
about the Literary Trail
LITERARY TRAIL OF GREATER BOSTON is part tour guide, part literary
history, altogether charming." - Robert B. Parker, author
of Spenser Books
"This lively guidebook invites residents to take a new look at
our area's Literary Heritage...A spirit of inclusiveness welcomes
Malcolm X and Fannie Farmer alongside the Alcotts and the Jameses..."
- Boston Magazine review
"A sprightly and informative little guidebook, packed with tidbits
about literary figures, publishers, bookstores, libraries, and other
historic sites on the newly designated Literary Trail...All that
a guidebook should be: compact, easy to use, informative, and entertaining."
- Kirkus Review
Editor's Pick
Yankee Magazine 2001 New England Annual Guide
"Bold and daring in concept...It's one of the most unique and
fascinating sightseeing trips you'll ever experience. Whether tourist
or resident, the Literary Trail will bring the great names in literature
to life."
Frank Avruch from FRANK AVRUCH'S MAN ABOUT TOWN.
"Integral to the Trail is the recognition that these 19th century
luminaries largely resided in three different places - Boston, Cambridge,
and Concord - but were in close contact with each other by rail
or coach along the twenty mile route."
New York Times
"The Literary Trail...showcases the best of our nation's literary
history."
